Chapter 15 - The Paper Went Into Theo’s Baby Box

Three years later, Theo was four.

The grand staircase remained in the mansion.

The old display cabinet did not.

Garrett never replaced it.

There was a narrow console table there now with one framed photograph.

Hannah holding newborn Theo.

One afternoon, Garrett was organizing a storage box of Theo’s baby things.

Hospital bracelet.

First pair of shoes.

A tiny knitted hat.

Then he found the folded DNA report.

The paper that had once landed beside broken porcelain while Lorraine stared at it in terror.

Theo climbed onto the couch beside him.

“What’s that?”

Garrett looked at the page.

For a second, he considered hiding it.

Then stopped.

Secrets had caused enough damage in the Bennett family.

“It’s a test from when you were a baby.”

“Did I pass?”

Garrett laughed.

“It wasn’t that kind of test.”

Theo frowned.

“What did it say?”

Garrett looked at his son.

Then gave him the only answer a four-year-old needed.

“It said what I already should have known.”

“What?”

“That you’re my boy.”

Theo grinned.

“I knew that.”

Garrett swallowed.

“Yeah.”

Theo jumped down and ran toward the staircase.

At the first step he turned.

“Watch me!”

“I’m watching.”

He climbed.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then faster.

Garrett stayed close but did not grab him.

Halfway up, Theo stopped.

Looked down.

“Dad!”

“What?”

“I belong upstairs too!”

Garrett smiled.

“You belong anywhere in this house you want to be.”

Theo continued climbing.

Garrett looked once more at the DNA report.

Then placed it inside the baby box.

Not framed.

Not displayed.

Not treated like a certificate granting Theo entry into the family.

Just a document.

Proof of biology.

Proof of a lie corrected.

Nothing more.

Lorraine had once stood at the top of those stairs and told a toddler:

A bastard like you doesn’t belong here.

Years later, Garrett understood why the folded paper frightened her so much.

It did not simply carry Theo’s name.

It carried the collapse of the rule Lorraine had spent half her life enforcing:

that she alone could decide who counted as family.

She had been wrong about Daniel.

Wrong about Hannah.

Wrong about Theo.

And ultimately wrong about the Bennetts themselves.

Family was not protected by excluding everyone who complicated it.

Family survived when the truth was allowed in.

Garrett closed the box.

Upstairs, Theo called for him again.

May you like

He stood.

And followed his son.
