Chapter 8 - Lorraine Had Already Asked the Trustee to Exclude Theo

Malcolm found the letter.

Sent by Lorraine four months earlier.

To the independent trustee administering Arthur’s family trust.

It stated:

Garrett has elected to raise a non-biological child as his own. While this is his personal choice, the child should not be treated as a Bennett descendant for beneficiary purposes.

Attached was the original paternity report.

The false one.

The trustee had not acted.

Instead, he requested independent documentation.

Lorraine never told Garrett.

She simply wrote back:

The matter is settled within the family. No further testing is necessary.

That sentence mattered.

She was not merely expressing a cruel opinion at dinner.

She had used the questionable test to make a formal legal representation about Theo.

And she had tried to prevent anyone from verifying it independently.

Garrett read the letter and felt physically ill.

His mother had been working to exclude his son while smiling beside him at birthdays.

The staircase incident was no longer an isolated explosion.

It was the emotional endpoint of a campaign that had already entered legal paperwork.
