Chapter 3 - Hannah Never Believed Lorraine’s Test
Hannah challenged the result immediately.
“Who took your sample?”
“My mother arranged it.”
“Who collected Theo’s?”
“She said the nurse did.”
“Were you there?”
Garrett wasn’t.
That was the problem.
Lorraine told him the service used home samples because Garrett was traveling for work.
She said she had used a cheek swab taken from his bathroom kit and arranged Theo’s sample through a private nurse.
Hannah stared at him.
“So neither of us saw your sample collected?”
“No.”
“And neither of us saw Theo’s?”
Garrett’s stomach tightened.
At the time, grief and anger made him resistant.
He wanted the result to be clear because uncertainty was worse.
Hannah pushed for a second test.
One with chain of custody.
Garrett agreed.
Then Hannah was killed in a highway accident before the appointment happened.
Theo was four months old.
That tragedy ended the argument without resolving it.
Garrett became sole caregiver.
Lorraine began speaking as if Hannah’s death had closed the case forever.
“You’re raising another man’s child.”
Garrett refused to answer.
“He will never be a Bennett.”
Garrett refused again.
But privately, one question kept growing:
