The confrontation happened with attorneys present.
No shouting.
No violence.
Garrett had already learned what uncontrolled rage could cost.
He placed the independent test on the table.
Then Lorraine’s old test beside it.
“Whose DNA was used?”
She stared at him.
“Mom.”
Silence.
“Whose?”
Finally:
“Your cousin Nathan’s.”
Garrett closed his eyes.
Nathan Bennett had lived at the estate temporarily during the months before Theo’s birth.
Same family.
Easy access.
Lorraine had taken biological material from his grooming kit and submitted it under Garrett’s name.
Why?
Her answer was the ugliest part.
“I was trying to save you.”
“From my son?”
“From Hannah.”
Garrett’s face hardened.
“She was going to tie you down forever.”
“She was the mother of my child.”
“You weren’t married.”
“So?”
“You were destroying everything your father built.”
Garrett stared at her.
Then understood.
This had never been about paternity.
Paternity was simply the tool.
Lorraine considered any relationship she could not control a threat to the Bennett family.
Hannah.
Daniel.
