Chapter 12 - Ethan Wanted to Sue Me Until He Read the Contract

Three days after the wedding, I received a letter from:
Ethan’s attorney.
Claims:
breach of contract,
emotional distress,
reputational damage,
service interruption.
My company’s counsel reviewed:
it.
Then sent:
our response.
Incident reports.
Photographs of:
the overturned cart.
Statements from:
staff.
Repair/replacement costs.
Relevant clauses regarding:
client misconduct,
safety,
temporary service suspension.
No lawsuit followed.
Why?
Because contracts are boring and therefore often:
useful.
Morrow invoiced Brielle and Ethan for:
damaged equipment,
replacement food,
additional labor caused by the disruption.
Around:
$8,700.
I did not waive:
it.
My mother called.
“Maya.”
“No.”
“You haven’t even heard what I’m asking.”
“Are you asking me to forgive the invoice?”
Silence.
Then:
“She’s your sister.”
I said:
“That is why she received forty-seven thousand dollars of value she did not pay for.”
Mom had not known:
that.
“What?”
I explained.
Silence.
Then:
“Why would you give that much?”
Good question.
I answered:
“Because I wanted her to feel loved.”
Mom said softly:
“Did she?”
I looked through my office window at:
my staff.
“I don’t know.”
That conversation hurt more than:
May you like
the shove.
