One night during menu tasting, a junior server accidentally brought the wrong:

I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
He smiled.
“Nothing.”
“It sounded like something.”
Brielle kicked my foot beneath:

“Don’t start.”
“Start what?”
“Interrogating Ethan.”
“He insulted a server.”
“He made a joke.”
That phrase.
Again.
Joke.
Ethan had a talent for delivering cruelty lightly enough that objecting made:

Brielle began copying:

A florist was:
“just flowers.”
A seamstress was:
“the alteration lady.”
Venue cleaners were:
“the night people.”
I noticed.
Disliked it.

working.
