Chapter 5 - Ethan Made Brielle Meaner

That sentence sounds like an excuse.

It is not.

Brielle was responsible for:

Brielle.

But Ethan rewarded the worst parts of:

her.

He worked with wealthy clients.

Talked constantly about:

“tier.”

Hotels had:

tiers.

Clients had:

tiers.

Neighborhoods.

Wine.

Schools.

People.

One night during menu tasting, a junior server accidentally brought the wrong:

fork.

Ethan said:

“This is why staff stays staff.”

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

He smiled.

“Nothing.”

“It sounded like something.”

Brielle kicked my foot beneath:

the table.

Later:

“Don’t start.”

“Start what?”

“Interrogating Ethan.”

“He insulted a server.”

“He made a joke.”

That phrase.

Again.

Joke.

Ethan had a talent for delivering cruelty lightly enough that objecting made:

you

look humorless.

Brielle began copying:

him.

A florist was:

“just flowers.”

A seamstress was:

“the alteration lady.”

Venue cleaners were:

“the night people.”

I noticed.

Disliked it.

Still kept:

working.

May you like

That was clue one.
