Chapter 1 - The Two Words That Changed Everything

The ballroom doors exploded inward so hard they struck the walls.

Ethan Carter barely noticed.

He was already running.

Crystal chandeliers burned above a polished marble floor. Formally dressed relatives stood frozen around the grand private ballroom, their faces pale beneath the warm gala lighting.

And in the center of the room stood something Ethan could not understand.

A massive clear block of ice.

Inside it—

his daughter.

“LILY!”

Twenty-month-old Lily was visible through the clear center, tiny beneath the towering sculpture, strawberry-blonde hair damp against her forehead, pale-blue toddler dress visible through fractured reflections of chandelier light.

She was crying.

Trembling.

Bare feet pulled close beneath her.

Physically unharmed.

But terrified.

Beside the ice stood Ethan’s older sister.

Vivian.

Forty-two.

Silver evening gown.

Dark hair pinned into an elegant updo.

Calm.

Smiling.

Ethan’s entire body went cold.

He charged toward Lily.

Vivian stepped directly into his path.

“Beautiful, isn’t she?”

Something inside Ethan broke.

He drove one hard front kick into Vivian.

She flew backward several feet and slid across the polished marble.

No second kick.

Ethan turned away from her immediately.

A red handheld flame torch lay beside the ice display.

He grabbed it.

“Daddy!”

Lily’s cry came muffled through the thick outer layer.

“I’m here!”

Ethan aimed the torch only at the heavy exterior ice, well away from Lily.

The controlled flame struck the outside.

Water hissed.

A white fracture line raced across the surface.

Then—

CRACK.

The weakened ice split outward.

Ethan dropped the torch safely aside.

He reached through the broken opening.

Found Lily.

Pulled her free.

She flew into him.

Her tiny arms locked around his neck.

Ethan pressed her tightly against his chest.

“I’VE GOT YOU, BABY.”

Lily sobbed against his tuxedo.

Ethan did not put her down.

Would not.

Behind him, Vivian pushed herself back to her feet.

She started toward them again.

Ethan turned with Lily secure in one arm.

Vivian barely made it two steps.

Ethan struck her once across the face with an open palm.

SLAP.

Vivian recoiled.

“YOU DID THIS TO MY DAUGHTER?!”

No second slap.

No further strike.

Lily clung tighter.

Ethan looked down at her.

Her cheeks were wet.

Her little fingers curled desperately into his jacket.

Then she looked up at him.

“Daddy…”

“I’m right here.”

Her voice was barely more than a whisper.

“Mommy too.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“What?”

Lily only stared at him.

Behind Ethan, Vivian’s face changed instantly.

Every trace of arrogance disappeared.

Fear replaced it.

Absolute fear.

Vivian said nothing.

Ethan slowly turned his head toward his sister.

The broken ice glittered behind them.

His daughter remained locked against his chest.

And suddenly Ethan understood that whatever he had interrupted that night had not begun with Lily.

His little girl had seen this before.

And somehow—

May you like

her mother was connected to it.
