Chapter 2 - Lily’s Mother Had Been Missing For Eleven Days

Lily’s mother was named Caroline.
Thirty-four.
Ethan’s wife of six years.
And for eleven days, nobody in the Carter family had known where she was.
That was the secret sitting beneath the gala.
Caroline had not officially been declared missing.
That was part of the problem.
Vivian had convinced everyone Caroline left voluntarily.
There had been an argument.
A serious one.
Caroline packed one suitcase.
Her car disappeared from the garage.
Then Vivian produced a handwritten note.
I need space. Don’t look for me. I’ll call when I’m ready.
Ethan hated the note.
Not because Caroline had never needed space.
Because she never wrote like that.
Caroline was direct.
Even furious, she would have said:
I’m taking three days. Lily stays with you. Do not call unless it’s about her.
Instead:
Don’t look for me.
Ethan called anyway.
Phone off.
He called Caroline’s sister.
Nothing.
Friends.
Nothing.
Hotel accounts.
Nothing.
Her credit cards had not been used.
Then Vivian stepped in.
“She told me she was thinking about leaving.”
Ethan stared at her.
“When?”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“She asked me not to.”
Vivian always had an answer.
That was her talent.
She could make intrusion sound like responsibility.
Control sound like competence.
And panic sound like overreaction.
“Caroline has been unhappy,” she told Ethan.
“That doesn’t mean she disappears from Lily.”
“Maybe she finally reached her limit.”
Ethan hated her for saying it.
But there had been strain.
His marriage had not been perfect.
He worked too much.
Caroline believed Vivian had far too much influence over the Carter family.
Ethan defended his sister more often than he should have.
So when Vivian suggested Caroline had simply walked away, part of Ethan feared she might be right.
That shame kept him uncertain.
Until Lily said:
Mommy too.
Now uncertainty was gone.
Caroline had not simply disappeared.
Lily knew something.
May you like
And Vivian knew why.
