Chapter 11 - Caroline Explained What Lily Had Seen
After recovering, Caroline finally explained the prototype chamber.
She and Vivian argued during the private preview.
Caroline had confronted her about North Vale.
Vivian denied everything.
Caroline said she would take the invoices directly to the board.
Vivian closed the service-gallery doors.
Then demonstrated the prototype’s interior chamber.
Not with physical force at first.
She told Caroline:
“You think everything transparent is safe because people can see through it.”
Caroline did not understand.
Then Vivian opened the chamber and dared her to inspect it.
Caroline stepped in.
Vivian closed the panel.
Locked it.
For less than two minutes.
No cold exposure.
No injury.
But Caroline panicked.
Vivian stood outside and said:
“Imagine how easy it is to make someone look present while keeping them completely powerless.”
Lily had been nearby with a nanny.
She wandered close enough to see her mother through the clear ice shell.
That image stayed inside her toddler memory.
Mommy.
Inside ice.
Aunt Vivi.
Then, at the gala, Vivian recreated the image with Lily.
Not because the child understood financial evidence.
Because Lily had begun repeating:
“Mommy ice.”
Vivian was terrified someone would ask what she meant.
So she tried to turn it into an elaborate gala stunt she could later dismiss as harmless.
A child inside a safe floral chamber.
An “artistic surprise.”
Something everyone would assume was theatrical.
