Chapter 1 - “What Has She Been Doing to You?”

Evelyn Carter was sitting on the kitchen floor when Ethan walked in.

For half a second, his brain refused to understand the picture.

His seventy-two-year-old mother sat beside the marble island in her pale-blue cardigan and floral blouse, a dinner plate balanced shakily across her lap. Steak. Mashed potatoes. Green beans. A metal fork trembled in one hand.

Vanessa stood over her.

Her black smartphone was raised.

Then Vanessa grabbed the back of Evelyn’s head.

“Vanessa—”

Ethan was too late.

She pressed Evelyn’s face down into the mashed potatoes for one brief, vicious beat.

Then released her.

Evelyn recoiled immediately, gasping and crying, mashed potato smeared harmlessly across one cheek and the side of her mouth.

Vanessa looked at her with open contempt.

“That’s where useless people belong.”

Ethan stopped dead in the hallway.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Vanessa lowered the phone.

Not dropped.

Lowered.

Deliberately.

Then folded her arms and gave Evelyn a smug sideways look.

“She should be grateful I let her stay.”

Ethan stared at his wife.

The anger came first.

Then something colder.

Because Vanessa did not look embarrassed at being caught.

She looked irritated that the scene had been interrupted.

Evelyn’s hands shook harder around the fork.

Ethan noticed.

His mother had always been proud.

Too proud sometimes.

The woman who used to run a vineyard tasting room during harvest with forty guests waiting and two employees missing was now staring at her dinner plate as if eye contact might cause another punishment.

“Mom?”

Evelyn did not answer.

Ethan moved closer.

Her fingers tightened around the fork.

Then she whispered:

“I didn’t want you angry with her.”

Ethan froze.

Not:

She lost her temper.

Not:

We argued.

Not:

It was an accident.

I didn’t want you angry with her.

As though Evelyn had been protecting Vanessa.

Or protecting Ethan from the truth about Vanessa.

Ethan slowly turned toward his wife.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

The smugness disappeared.

Ethan crouched beside Evelyn.

He did not take the plate away because she was still holding it tightly and he did not want to frighten her further. Instead he gently steadied her forearm.

“Mom…”

Evelyn looked at him.

Tears moved down her face through the food still smeared on her cheek.

“What has she been doing to you?”

Vanessa took one step backward.

Ethan looked up sharply.

And in that instant, he saw the phone still in her hand.

Camera app open.

Recording timer stopped at:

00:47.

Vanessa had not merely been humiliating his mother.

May you like

She had been filming her.
