Chapter 8 - Ethan Had Been Using Vanessa as a Filter

Ethan’s own emails embarrassed him.

His mother would call.

He would not answer.

Then text Vanessa:

What does Mom want?

Vanessa:

Same lodge complaint.

Ethan:

Handle it.

Another.

Evelyn emailed Ethan directly:

Need the updated financing packet before Thursday.

Ethan forwarded to Vanessa:

Can you summarize for Mom?

Vanessa replied:

She doesn’t need full lender packet. I’ll explain.

Ethan:

Thanks.

There.

Not sinister.

Efficient.

Dangerous over time.

Then one board packet.

Evelyn said she never received it.

Vanessa insisted she did.

Email logs showed it went to Vanessa’s address as household coordinator.

Not Evelyn’s.

Vanessa printed selected pages.

Ethan had authorized this arrangement months earlier because Evelyn complained documents were too long.

What she actually said was:

“Stop sending me ninety pages when the decision is six.”

Ethan interpreted:

Mom doesn’t want packets.

Then Vanessa became the editor.

By the lodge vote, she controlled:

which pages,

which explanations,

which deadlines

reached Evelyn.

No forged vote.

No fake signature.

Still information asymmetry.

Then Ethan remembered his father.

Robert had done something similar.

He would tell Evelyn:

“Don’t worry about that part.”

She hated it.

After Robert died, Ethan promised never to patronize her that way.

Then recreated it through delegation.

When Ethan apologized, Evelyn answered:

“You thought you were helping.”

“I was making it easier.”

“For who?”

There.

Mostly:

him.

Then she said:

“I stopped calling you because every time I did, Vanessa answered afterward.”

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“If I complained to you, she knew within an hour.”

Because Ethan forwarded:

everything.

Looking for context.

He never considered what that felt like for Evelyn.

No private channel to her son.

Then one message:

Mom says you took her keys again. What happened?

Vanessa answered:

She’s confused. Don’t feed it.

Ethan replied:

Okay.

Two letters.

Okay.

For Evelyn:

silence.

That was how she learned not to tell him.

Not because Vanessa threatened her every day.

May you like

Because she believed Ethan had already chosen the interpreter.
