Chapter 12 - The Marriage Ended Because Ethan No Longer Trusted Vanessa’s Version of Reality
Ethan and Vanessa tried counseling for five months.
Why try?
Because neither wanted to make the most permanent decision while everything was still raw.
Then the problem surfaced.
Ethan did not trust:

“Your mother screamed at me,”

“Your mother forgot the appointment,”

Vanessa became furious.
“You act like I lie about everything.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“You edit.”
She went still.
That was exactly it.
Not constant fabrication.
Selective reality.
Then Vanessa attacked back.
“You do the same thing.”
Ethan frowned.
“You tell yourself you were too busy to notice. You weren’t. You liked me handling her because then you didn’t have to choose between us.”
True.
He sat back.
Vanessa continued.
“You made me the bad cop, then hated me when I became one.”
Partly true.
Ethan had repeatedly asked:
handle Mom.
Calm Mom.
Explain to Mom.
Keep Mom out of this until after the meeting.
He outsourced friction.
Then judged the person who developed methods to remove it.
Again:
not equal responsibility.
Vanessa chose humiliation.
Ethan did not ask for that.
But he helped build:
the role.
Then counselor asked:
“Can you rebuild trust?”
Vanessa said:
“Yes.”
Ethan said:
“I don’t know.”
Months later:
still didn’t.
They separated.
Then divorced.
No revenge.
Prenup simplified finances.
Vanessa kept her separate hospitality consulting business.
No ownership in Carter Ridge.
No dramatic disinheritance needed.
She moved to San Francisco.
The lodge project eventually opened.
Her early concept work remained influential.
Ethan struggled with that.
