Chapter 4 - The First Video Looked Terrible Until Ethan Saw What Came Before It
Vanessa agreed to let Ethan review the recordings.
Not because she became cooperative.
Because she believed they proved her case.
The first video showed Evelyn standing in the pantry.
She looked confused.
“Where are they?”
Vanessa’s voice came from behind the camera.
“Where are what, Evelyn?”
“The coffee filters.”
“They’re in your hand.”
Evelyn looked down.
Coffee filters.
Then became visibly embarrassed.
Vanessa said:
“This is what I mean.”
Evelyn snapped:
“Turn that damn thing off.”

Maybe minor forgetfulness.
Then Ethan noticed:

6:42 a.m.
The morning after the vineyard’s annual charity dinner.
Evelyn had gone to bed at two.
He asked:
“What happened before this?”
Vanessa shrugged.
“She couldn’t find filters.”
Evelyn spoke from the sofa.
“I’d already made coffee.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
“I was looking for the second package because we were low.”
Vanessa said:
“That is not what happened.”
Ethan did not decide.
Next video.
Evelyn crying at the kitchen table.
“I want my keys.”
Vanessa:
“You cannot drive.”
Evelyn:
“You’re not my mother.”
Vanessa:
“And you’re acting like a child.”
Evelyn slapped the table with her palm.
“Give me my keys!”

Aggressive.

Did any doctor advise suspension from driving?
No.
Had Evelyn had an accident?
No.
Had she become lost?
Not really.
She exited a parking structure on the wrong street, walked around the block, and found the car ten minutes later.
Maybe worth discussing.
Not unilateral confiscation.

Evelyn staring at her dinner plate.
Vanessa off-camera:
“Tell Ethan why you threw the glass.”
Evelyn:
“I didn’t throw it.”
“You knocked it across the room.”
“I reached for it.”
“You’re lying.”
Evelyn became angry.
“Leave me alone!”
Video ended.
Then Ethan checked kitchen security footage from that date.
The glass had been near the counter edge.
Evelyn reached.
Hit it accidentally.
It slid off and shattered.
Not thrown.
Vanessa’s question inserted:
intent.
That was the pattern.
She did not necessarily fabricate the visible event.
She narrated it.
Then recorded Evelyn reacting to the narration.
Confusion became:

aggression.
