Chapter 9 - Evelyn Had Protected Ethan From More Than Vanessa’s Cruelty
“I didn’t want you angry with her.”
Ethan kept returning to that sentence.
Why protect Vanessa?
Evelyn finally explained.
Because Ethan looked happy.
His first marriage had ended badly.
No children.
Years of loneliness.
Then Vanessa.
Elegant.
Capable.
Shared his love of wine and hospitality.
Evelyn liked seeing him come home to someone.
Then she noticed the controlling behavior.
At first she thought:
marriage problem.
Not hers.
Vanessa started telling her:
“Ethan doesn’t need more stress.”
That sentence worked.
Evelyn knew how hard he worked.
So when Vanessa snapped:
she stayed quiet.
When Vanessa took keys:
quiet.
When Vanessa refused to give her company documents:
quiet at first.
Then when she finally called Ethan, he sounded tired.
“Mom, can we deal with this tomorrow?”
Evelyn heard:
burden.
Then Vanessa said:
“See? He’s exhausted.”
Not explicit threat.
Emotional conditioning.
Then the food.
Why was Evelyn on the floor?
She had dropped her fork.
Bent to retrieve it.
Vanessa said:
“Stay there.”
Evelyn thought she was joking.
Vanessa put the dinner plate into her lap.
“Maybe if you eat where the mess is, you’ll remember not to make one.”
Evelyn protested.
Vanessa raised the phone.
“Go ahead. Yell. Let Ethan see.”
That was the trap.
If Evelyn became angry:

Then Vanessa pressed her face into the potatoes anyway.
Why?
Ethan arrived earlier than expected.
Vanessa heard the hallway door.
Later she claimed she had not.
Evelyn believed she did.
If true, why intensify when Ethan might see?
Perhaps Vanessa was so accustomed to controlling the narrative that she assumed even a shocking action could be explained.
Or perhaps anger overrode calculation.
No one could know exactly.
Then Evelyn told Ethan:
“I kept thinking if I could just get through the lodge vote, maybe things would calm down.”
Ethan stared.
Even she had internalized timing.
Get through transaction.
Then address relationship.
Everyone delaying truth until after:
something.
The deal.
Harvest.
Election? no.
Holiday.
Next meeting.
Later.
