Chapter 10 - Ethan did not hit his wife, and that mattered
Ethan was furious enough to want to.
He admitted that privately.
When Vanessa reached for Lucas, Ethan caught her wrist and forced her arm down.
Then he released it when the movement stopped.
He did not slap her.
Punch her.
Shove her.
Chase her.
That restraint became important later.
Not because men deserve medals for not hitting their wives.
Because Ethan wanted Lucas to learn something different from what Vanessa had been teaching.
Power did not mean whoever frightened the other person most.
Protection could be forceful without becoming revenge.
The closest Ethan came to losing control was after Vanessa said:
“I was teaching him his damn place.”
He stepped toward her.
His voice exploded.
“HE TOLD ME WHAT YOU DO WHEN I’M GONE!”
Then he stopped.
The words did what violence could not.
Vanessa’s face changed because she understood the secrecy was gone.
That became the real reversal.
She had built authority around Lucas believing nobody would know.
