Chapter 2 - Lucas had called his father the night before

Ethan had not returned early because of a canceled meeting.

He came home because of twelve whispered words from his son.

The previous evening, Ethan had been in Boston for a two-day business conference connected to the equestrian company he partly owned with two longtime partners.

He called Lucas before bedtime.

Usually Lucas wanted to show him toys, ask where he was sleeping, or make him promise to bring something useless from the airport.

That night the boy barely spoke.

Ethan asked:

“You okay, buddy?”

Lucas looked offscreen.

“Yeah.”

“You sure?”

Another pause.

Then Lucas whispered:

“Dad… when you’re gone, Vanessa says different rules happen.”

Ethan sat upright.

“What different rules?”

Lucas’s eyes moved toward the bedroom door.

“I’m not supposed to tell.”

“Who said that?”

No answer.

Then the boy whispered:

“She says you chose her.”

Ethan felt something inside him tighten.

“Lucas, listen to me. You can tell me anything.”

Lucas started crying.

“She says if I keep making trouble, Grace has to leave and then I go away too.”

“Go where?”

“I don’t know.”

Then the bedroom door opened behind him.

Lucas immediately wiped his face.

Vanessa entered.

The call ended less than thirty seconds later.

Ethan called back.

No answer.

He tried Vanessa.

She texted:

He’s overtired and being dramatic again. Let him sleep.

The phrase dramatic again bothered him.

For months, Vanessa had used some version of it whenever Lucas became upset.

Ethan had accepted that explanation far too often.

Not this time.

He called Grace privately.

At first she said almost nothing.

Then Ethan asked one direct question.

“Is my son afraid of Vanessa when I’m not home?”

Grace went silent.

That silence was enough.

“Grace.”

“Yes.”

One word.

Ethan stood up from the hotel desk.

“How bad?”

“I don’t want to tell you this over the phone.”

“Tell me enough.”

Grace’s voice shook.

“She scares him on purpose.”

Ethan changed his flight.

He told nobody at the estate.

The next afternoon, instead of arriving through the main drive where Vanessa would see his car, he had a driver leave him at the lower stable entrance. He walked across the covered terrace and entered through the garden-gallery doors.

He had planned to speak with Grace first.

Instead, he opened the doors and saw proof before anyone had the chance to explain it.
