Chapter 13 - Grace stayed, but her role changed
Grace did not become Lucas’s new mother.
Nobody wanted that.
She remained Grace.
That was enough.
Ethan promoted her from housekeeper to household manager after the investigation.
Not as a reward for loyalty.
Because the estate needed someone with clear authority to report concerns without fear of dismissal by whoever happened to be married to the owner.
Grace initially refused.
“I don’t need a title to protect him.”
Ethan answered:
“No. But the next employee might need a title to know they’re allowed to speak.”
That changed her mind.
The household rules changed too.
Any staff member could report child-safety concerns directly to Ethan, Lucas’s pediatrician, or the designated family attorney without going through another household adult.
No one could fire staff unilaterally for making a good-faith safety report.
It sounded corporate.
Maybe it was.
But the Bennett family had already learned what happened when private authority depended entirely on relationships.
Clear structure was less elegant.
