Chapter 12 - The marriage ended without turning Lucas into a weapon

Vanessa was not Lucas’s adoptive parent.
She had no independent parental rights after separating from Ethan.
That simplified part of the legal process.
It did not make the emotional process easy.
Ethan filed for divorce.
Vanessa moved out of the Connecticut estate under a temporary agreement arranged through counsel.
She retained ordinary rights to marital property and whatever financial settlement the marriage entitled her to.
Ethan did not try to financially annihilate her.
The estate itself had been Ethan’s separate family property before the marriage.
Accounting handled any marital contributions made during the relationship.
No magical disinheritance.
No secret clause.
No dramatic transfer.
The child-related boundary was simpler.
No contact with Lucas.
At least not while Rebecca believed contact would destabilize him.
Vanessa protested.
Ethan’s answer was:
“This isn’t punishment.”
And it wasn’t.

It was protection from an adult who still could not explain her behavior without making Lucas responsible for the discomfort he caused her.
