Chapter 14 - Lucas finally asked Ethan why he didn’t know
The hardest conversation happened six months later.
Not in therapy.
In the stable.
Lucas was sitting on a hay bale watching Grace prepare a pony named Jasper for a beginner lesson.
Ethan sat beside him.
Without looking up, Lucas asked:
“How come you didn’t know?”
Ethan understood immediately.
“About Vanessa?”
Lucas nodded.
Ethan thought about every answer available.
Work.
Travel.
Manipulation.
Vanessa being convincing.
Then chose the one that mattered.
“I wasn’t paying attention in the right way.”
Lucas looked at him.
“You paid attention to me.”
“Sometimes.”
Ethan swallowed.
“But when you were scared, I kept thinking there had to be another explanation.”
“Why?”
“Because the real explanation was something I didn’t want to believe.”
Lucas considered that.
“Because you liked Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
That answer seemed important to him.
Then:
“Did you like her more than me?”
“No.”
Immediate.
Certain.
“Then why did you listen to her?”
Ethan looked down.
“Because grown-ups can love somebody and still believe the wrong person.”
Lucas was quiet.
Then asked:
“Do you believe me now?”
Ethan put one arm around him.
“I believe you. But I also want you to know something bigger.”
“What?”
“You never should have needed the perfect story before I listened.”
Lucas leaned against him.
The conversation ended there.
No dramatic forgiveness.
No promise that Ethan would never make another mistake.
