Chapter 1 - The Recording Emma Had Been Afraid To Show Me

The first thing I saw when I walked into my living room was my five-year-old daughter on her knees beside the dog’s metal food bowl.
My name is Vittorio Bennett.
I was forty-nine years old, tired from work, still wearing my dark blue-black jacket when I stepped out of the hallway and stopped dead.
This wasn’t some mansion.
There were no servants lining marble corridors.
It was the ordinary middle-class home I had spent sixteen years paying for.
Beige sofa.
Wooden coffee table.
Bookshelf.
Family photographs.
Hardwood floors scratched by toys, shoes, and real life.
And in the middle of it sat Lucy.
My biological daughter.
Light-brown curls around a tear-streaked face.
Cream knit cardigan.
Light skirt.
Kneeling beside the metal dog bowl.
Bianca stood over her.
My wife.
Lucy’s stepmother.
Blonde hair pinned into a neat bun.
Cream shirt.
Fitted trousers.
Perfectly calm.
Until Lucy saw me.
Her face crumpled.
“DADDY…”
I moved toward her.
Then she said the sentence that stopped every thought in my head.
“I’M A HUMAN BEING, NOT A DOG.”
Something inside me changed instantly.
I rushed across the room, dropped to my knees, and pulled Lucy into my arms.
She wrapped both arms tightly around my neck.
I held her.
Didn’t put her down again.
That was when I noticed Emma Clark near the living-room door.
Emma had worked for our family for seven years.
Twenty-nine.
Dark hair pinned neatly back.
Black-and-white housekeeper’s uniform.
She was trembling.
And holding a smartphone.
Behind her stood Marcus Hale.
Thirty-six.
Dark jacket.
Jeans.
Someone Bianca had introduced months earlier as an old family friend.
Emma looked at me.
“Sir… you need to see this.”
She raised the phone.
A recording played.
The same living room.
Earlier.
Lucy crying.
Bianca repeatedly forcing my daughter down toward the dog bowl while Marcus stood nearby laughing.
Not one isolated cruel remark.
Not one bad moment.
A pattern.
Then Marcus closed the living-room door.
I felt Lucy tighten around my neck as I watched.
Marcus saw the recording too.
His face changed.
He lunged toward Emma.
He reached for the phone.
I stepped between them without releasing Lucy.
Then I kicked Marcus once.
Hard.
He flew backward and slammed into the wooden bookshelf.
Books and ornaments crashed around him.
No second kick.
Then Bianca reached toward Lucy.
I turned.
One open-palmed strike across Bianca’s face.
SLAP.
She fell backward beside the leather armchair.
No second strike.
No pursuit.
Lucy remained against my chest.
Emma still held the phone.
Marcus did not get it.
I looked down.
Saw the same metal dog bowl.
Picked it up with my free hand.
Then hurled it onto the floor directly in front of Bianca.
CLANG.
She stared at it.
Then at Emma’s phone.
I stared down at my wife.
“ENJOY YOUR LAST MEAL.”
Bianca’s arrogance disappeared.
Her face went pale.
And that was when I realized something even more disturbing.
She wasn’t terrified because I had caught her humiliating Lucy.
She was terrified because Emma’s phone contained something else.
May you like
Something Marcus had been willing to attack her to erase.
