Chapter 13 - The Money Came Back Slowly

There was no magical account freeze that restored everything overnight.

My business had lost real money.

Some payments had purchased actual materials.

Some were inflated.

Some were clearly unsupported.

Accountants spent months untangling them.

The final disputed amount was just over $31,000.

Enough to hurt a middle-class business badly.

Not enough to make anyone a millionaire villain.

Marcus agreed to restitution as part of resolving the financial case.

Bianca was separately responsible for amounts tied to approvals she knowingly falsified.

Insurance covered some losses.

I absorbed others.

For almost a year, I worked extra jobs.

Delayed replacing my truck.

Canceled a planned kitchen renovation.

Lucy noticed.

“Are we poor now?”

“No.”

“Are we rich?”

“Definitely not.”

She laughed.

“We’re normal?”

“Painfully.”

That became our joke.

And strangely, rebuilding the business helped me.

Every legitimate invoice.

Every real receipt.

Every job completed.

It reminded me that ordinary life had rules.

Work done.

Money earned.

Promises kept.

May you like

No secret system underneath.
