Chapter 11 - Emma Nearly Quit Before She Started Recording

Emma had almost left us.
Three months earlier she had drafted a resignation letter.
I found out only later.
“Why?” I asked.
She hesitated.
“Because Mrs. Bennett kept telling me not to interfere.”
“With Lucy?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
Emma looked embarrassed.
Then answered honestly.
“I did once.”
I remembered immediately.
She had said:
“Mr. Bennett, Lucy seems frightened when you’re gone.”
I had been late for an estimate.
I answered:
“She’s going through a phase.”
Emma nodded.
That was it.
No second attempt.
Not then.
She started documenting instead.
The first recordings were ordinary.
Bianca insulting Lucy.
Marcus entering while I was gone.
Conversations near the kitchen.
Then the dog bowl.
Emma wanted something undeniable.
Something nobody could call misunderstanding.
The video succeeded.
But I hated that she felt she needed it.

Because the person she was trying to convince was me.
