Chapter 4 - Lucy Had Seen Them Before I Did

Children notice patterns long before they can explain them.
Lucy had seen Marcus coming to the house while I was working.
Not once.
Many times.
Sometimes Bianca told her he was fixing something.
Sometimes Marcus brought tools.
Sometimes he brought nothing.
One afternoon Lucy walked into the kitchen and saw them kissing.
She knew kissing meant something because five-year-olds understand more than adults think.
She asked:
“Why are you kissing him? Daddy kisses you.”
Bianca immediately separated from Marcus.
Then crouched in front of Lucy.
“We were joking.”
Lucy shook her head.
“You don’t kiss Emma like that.”
Marcus laughed.
Bianca didn’t.
That evening, Lucy tried telling me.
“Daddy, Marcus kisses Bianca.”
I was carrying grocery bags.
Bianca was standing right behind her.
I smiled distractedly.
“He probably kissed her cheek goodbye.”
“No.”
Bianca interrupted gently.
“Lucy’s been making up stories again.”
I remember looking at my daughter.
She looked furious.
Not deceptive.
But Bianca sounded calm.
And calm won.
“Lucy, we don’t accuse people of things.”
Her eyes filled.
“I saw it.”
“Enough.”
I said that.
Not Bianca.
Me.
Lucy stopped speaking.
Bianca learned something crucial that night.
If she could make Lucy emotional enough, I would mistake emotion for unreliability.

After that, the punishment got worse.
