Chapter 1 - The woman Ethan thought had vanished

Warm afternoon sunlight poured through the tall ocean-view windows of the Newport estate’s private guest wing, catching the pale oak floors and brass sconces along the service corridor.

Ethan Bennett walked beside his wife, Serena, toward the main family hall.

Then he saw the housekeeping cart coming from the opposite direction.

The woman pushing it wore a dark-green staff uniform, her brunette hair twisted into a messy bun. At first Ethan barely looked at her.

Then she lifted her face.

He stopped so abruptly Serena nearly walked into him.

“CLAIRE?! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE?”

Claire Miller froze behind the linen cart.

For one impossible second, neither of them seemed able to breathe.

Ethan had not seen Claire in months.

The last time they spoke face-to-face, she had promised she would call him the following morning.

She never did.

Her phone number changed.

Her apartment emptied.

The design studio where she worked told him she had resigned.

After weeks of searching and silence, Ethan finally accepted the explanation Serena repeatedly gave him:

Claire had chosen to leave.

Now she was standing inside his Newport estate wearing a housekeeping uniform.

And her eyes were already filling with tears.

Claire stopped the cart directly in front of them.

“YOUR WIFE SAID I WORK FOR HER OR I LOSE EVERYTHING!”

Ethan’s expression went blank.

Slowly, he turned toward Serena.

Serena did not answer.

Her face twisted instead.

She stepped toward the linen cart and drove one hard kick into its side.

The cart jolted several feet across the corridor. Folded sheets and towels spilled across the oak floor.

Claire recoiled but remained safely upright.

Only when the cart had completely stopped did Serena grab Ethan tightly by the forearm and scream toward Claire:

“SHE’S YOUR OLD TRASH! I PUT HER WHERE SHE BELONGS!”

Ethan stared at his wife.

Then ripped his arm free.

He walked directly toward Claire.

“What is she talking about?”

Claire’s lips trembled.

Ethan moved closer.

And that was when his eyes dropped.

The dark-green housekeeping uniform could not hide the unmistakable curve of Claire’s stomach.

Ethan stopped.

Everything in his face changed.

“YOU’RE PREGNANT?!”

Claire looked at him through tears.

Before she could answer, Serena saw where Ethan was staring.

Her jealousy detonated.

She rushed toward Claire, stopped directly in front of her, and slapped her hard across the face.

Claire’s head snapped sideways.

She stumbled back one step but stayed upright. One hand went immediately over her belly.

No second strike came.

Ethan turned toward Serena in furious disbelief.

Claire steadied herself beside the displaced cart.

Then looked straight at him.

“ASK YOUR WIFE WHY SHE NEVER TOLD YOU!”

Ethan froze.

The anger vanished from his face.

Something colder replaced it.

He slowly turned toward Serena.

And this time Serena looked frightened.

Not because Ethan had found Claire.

May you like

Because after months of controlling every version of what had happened between them, Claire had finally asked the one question Serena could not answer without unraveling the entire lie.
