Chapter 10 - Serena’s slap became evidence of the same pattern
Claire documented the slap.
Not because it caused serious physical injury.
It didn’t.
She had mild swelling and tenderness.
The danger was greater because she was pregnant, but Serena had struck Claire’s face, not her abdomen, and Claire remained physically stable.
A physician examined her and confirmed the pregnancy had not been affected.
Ethan gave a statement describing exactly what he witnessed.
Serena kicked the linen cart.
Grabbed Ethan.
Called Claire trash.
Then, after seeing Ethan notice the pregnancy, Serena rushed directly at Claire and slapped her.
The sequence mattered.
Jealousy was not speculation.
It was visible escalation.
Serena’s attorney later described it as an emotional breakdown caused by discovering her husband’s former lover was pregnant.
Claire’s attorney answered:
“Mrs. Bennett already knew.”
That was the point.
Serena had known for months.
The slap did not occur because the pregnancy shocked her.
It occurred because Ethan seeing the pregnancy destroyed the secrecy Serena had maintained.
The physical action was not the mystery.
It was the panic response to the mystery ending.
And because Claire was safely upright after the slap, Ethan did not retaliate physically.
He turned toward Serena, furious, but stopped there.
Later he admitted he wanted to hit something.
Instead he called security, attorneys, and a physician.
That difference mattered.
There was already enough coercion in the story.
