Chapter 13 - Ethan ended his marriage for reasons bigger than Claire

Ethan filed for divorce from Serena.
People naturally assumed he did it because Claire was pregnant with his child.
That was incomplete.
Even if the baby had been Adam Pierce’s, Ethan said later, the marriage was over.
The reason was Serena’s conduct.
She accessed private communications.
Sent a false message from Ethan’s account.
Blocked communication.
Misrepresented Ethan’s intentions to Claire.
Used economic vulnerability to position Claire inside a job she could control.
Manipulated staffing schedules so Ethan would never see her.
Reconciled with Ethan while preserving a lie she knew had shaped his decision.
Then physically assaulted Claire when exposure became unavoidable.
Paternity made the damage more painful.
It did not create the betrayal.
The financial side of the divorce proceeded normally.
Serena had legitimate marital claims to certain jointly acquired assets.
She did not become penniless because she behaved horribly.
The Newport estate itself was held through a Bennett family property company that predated their marriage, though marital expenditures used for renovations had to be accounted for during settlement.
Again, no magical property seizure.
No secret inheritance clause.
No instant punishment through wealth.
The real loss Serena suffered was relational.
Ethan stopped believing her.

And because her entire control strategy depended on managing what he believed, that was the one consequence she could not negotiate around.
