Chapter 5 - “Work for me or lose everything” was not an empty threat
The threat was not that Serena could magically take Claire’s property.
Claire barely had property to take.
What Serena controlled was the fragile infrastructure holding Claire together.
The Newport household-services company provided temporary accommodation in a small employee apartment near the estate, health coverage beginning immediately, and a salary Claire desperately needed while helping pay for her mother’s rehabilitation.
At first Serena stayed away from her.
Then the humiliation began.
Claire was reassigned from administrative household coordination to housekeeping.
No explanation.
Her uniform changed.
Her hours lengthened.
Serena repeatedly scheduled her in private guest areas where Claire was more likely to feel the contrast between her old professional life and her new position.
When Claire complained to the staffing manager, she learned something important.
The manager took instructions directly from Serena because Serena was the household client.
Claire could quit.
But if she quit immediately, she would lose the employer-provided housing within thirty days and health insurance at the end of the coverage period.
Ordinarily, that would be difficult.
Pregnant, unemployed, and supporting a recovering parent, it felt catastrophic.
Serena knew that.
So when Claire threatened to leave anyway, Serena said:
“Go ahead.”
Then added:
“And when Ethan asks why you took my job after supposedly wanting nothing from his family, I’ll make sure he understands exactly what kind of woman you are.”
Claire stared at her.
“You said he doesn’t want me.”
“He doesn’t.”
“Then why do you care what he thinks?”
Serena had no good answer.
That was the first moment Claire suspected something was wrong with the entire story.
She began trying to contact Ethan independently.
His office would not route personal calls easily.
She sent a letter.
It came back weeks later as undeliverable because Serena had given her an outdated mailing address for the private office.
Claire tried social media.
Ethan’s account appeared unavailable to her.
Serena had blocked Claire from that too.
One by one, the technical pieces began looking less like rejection and more like interference.
Claire told nobody yet.
She wanted proof before she let herself hope.
Then her pregnancy began showing.
