Chapter 8 - Grace was replaced by a payroll clerk this time
There was no heroic housekeeper in this story who saw everything.
That made Serena’s scheme easier.
But there was a payroll clerk named Natalie Shaw who noticed something strange after Ethan found Claire.
Natalie worked for the outside company handling payroll and benefits for several Bennett family properties. She had never met Claire personally. She knew her only as Employee 4472.
During the legal review following the corridor confrontation, Ethan’s attorney asked the company to preserve all assignment changes affecting Claire.
Natalie produced them.
The pattern was unmistakable.
Whenever Ethan’s calendar showed an overnight stay in Newport, Claire’s assignment changed within twenty-four hours.
Guest wing to laundry annex.
Main house to inventory storage.
Day shift to evening shift.
On two occasions, paid leave was inserted for no documented reason.
Who requested the changes?
Serena.
Every time.
Natalie also found an email from Serena to the staffing manager:
Employee C.M. should never be assigned to family-facing spaces when Mr. Bennett is on property. Personal matter. Do not discuss with him.
The staffing manager followed the instruction because Serena was listed as household supervisor.
Nothing about the email was criminal by itself.
But it destroyed Serena’s claim that Claire’s presence had been coincidence.
She knew Claire worked there.
She intentionally kept Ethan from seeing her.
And she did it repeatedly.
Ethan read the email without speaking.
Then asked:
“How long?”
His attorney answered:
“Four months.”
Four months.
Four months of walking through properties attached to his own name while Claire was quietly moved out of his path.
Four months during which Serena rebuilt their marriage while controlling the physical location of the woman Ethan believed had abandoned him.
The betrayal felt different from infidelity.
It was not romantic secrecy.
It was narrative theft.
