Chapter 3 - Serena learned about the pregnancy first

Claire did not tell Serena.
A medical office did not violate confidentiality.
Nobody dramatically left a pregnancy test on a restaurant table.
The truth came through something far more ordinary.
Claire fainted during a site inspection.
She had been experiencing nausea for days but blamed stress and lack of sleep. A coworker insisted she go to urgent care.
Pregnant.
Just under seven weeks.
Claire sat in her car afterward with both hands on the steering wheel, staring at the ultrasound referral on her phone and trying to understand what the result meant.
She called Ethan.
No answer.
He was in Montreal closing a property acquisition.
She sent a message.
Can you call me tonight? Something important happened.
Then she called her closest friend, Julia.
That should have been the end of Serena’s involvement.
Instead, Serena happened to be at Ethan’s Boston townhouse that afternoon collecting clothes and several boxes she had left behind.
Ethan had given her temporary access because they were separating civilly at that point.
His tablet sat charging in the kitchen.
It was still signed into the same cloud account as his phone.
Claire’s message appeared on the screen.
Serena saw the name.
Claire.
Something important happened.
She picked up the tablet.
Then put it down.
Then picked it up again.
Later, during mediation, Serena would claim she only wanted to know whether Claire was already moving into the townhouse.
That might even have been true for the first ten seconds.
Then she opened the message thread.
She read months of conversation between Ethan and Claire.
Nothing graphic.
Nothing secretive in the scandalous sense.
But intimate.
Hopeful.
They talked about whether they were foolish to try again.
About Ethan’s divorce.
About Claire being terrified of another relationship being rearranged around the Bennett family.
One message from Ethan hurt Serena more than everything else.
I spent years wondering if losing you was the biggest mistake I ever dressed up as maturity.
Serena read it twice.
Then deleted Claire’s newest message from the synchronized conversation.
She also blocked Claire’s number temporarily through Ethan’s linked device settings, a change he would not notice immediately because he was traveling.
It was impulsive.
The rest was not.
That evening Serena called Claire herself.
Claire answered in surprise.
“Why are you calling me?”
Serena’s voice was controlled.
“I think you and I need to talk.”
Claire nearly hung up.
Then Serena said:
“It’s about Ethan.”
They met the next morning.
Claire had not yet told Ethan about the pregnancy.
She made the mistake of telling Serena.
Not because she trusted her.
Because Serena started the conversation by saying Ethan had called the night before and decided he wanted to reconsider the divorce.
That was a lie.
Claire went pale.
Serena watched.
Then asked:
“Is there something I should know?”
Claire should have walked away.
Instead she said:
“I’m pregnant.”
Serena’s face barely moved.
But inside that moment, the marriage stopped being the only thing she believed Claire could take from her.
Now there might be a child.
A permanent connection.
Something Serena could never compete with using clothes, houses, parties, or marital status.
So she made a decision.
Ethan would not hear it from Claire.

Not if Serena could stop him.
