Chapter 12 - THE OTHER HALE

The man inside my house moved with Martin’s posture but not his caution.

He knew where the trust records were stored. He opened the correct cabinet without searching.

Claire ordered local police to hold the perimeter until federal agents arrived. No one wanted a frightened officer shooting the wrong twin.

The intruder removed one file.

Helen’s reopened estate.

Then he looked directly into the security camera.

“Arthur,” he said, “you signed the wrong will.”

The feed went black.

Agents entered ten minutes later.

The house was empty.

A window overlooking the frozen beach stood open. Footprints led toward the lake and vanished near a snow-covered access road.

On my desk sat a black envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of a will signed by Helen two weeks before her death.

It left her shares not to Elise and me.

It left them to “the surviving Vance child.”

Elise read the phrase twice.

“I was her only child.”

Martin examined the signature.

“Authentic.”

The witness names belonged to two nurses who later worked for Cross Rehabilitation. One had died. The other was missing.

If the will was valid, it implied Helen believed another Vance child existed.

Claire returned to Richard Cross’s seized records.

The fertility archive showed a procedure performed eighteen years before Helen’s death.

Egg retrieval. Embryo creation. Intended parents: Arthur and Helen Vance.

I remembered the appointment. We had tried fertility treatment before Elise was born naturally. The clinic told us no viable embryos remained.

The record said otherwise.

Two embryos had been stored.

One later transferred to an unnamed surrogate.

The resulting child would be twenty-nine now.

Elise stood.

“You have another child.”

I could not answer.

Biology had been used against me before. Now it reached backward into my marriage to Helen.

Claire asked who authorized the transfer.

The electronic approval carried Helen’s code.

But the timestamp came three months after her death.

The Continuity Covenant had created a hidden heir long before Vanessa created Noah.

Martin’s voice shook.

“Malcolm may be trying to activate the old will.”

“Why?” Elise asked.

“Because a surviving Vance child could challenge the trust.”

That afternoon, a woman arrived at the patient-rights center carrying a worn leather briefcase.

Her name was Rebecca Lane.

Twenty-nine. Corporate investigator. Born through anonymous surrogacy in Wisconsin.

She had spent seven years trying to identify her biological parents.

Her DNA matched mine.

And Helen’s.

Rebecca looked at me without tears.

“I didn’t come for money.”

I believed her immediately because she did not look at the documents.

She looked at Elise.

“I came because someone tried to kill me yesterday.”

A truck forced her car off an interstate ramp. She escaped through the passenger door before the vehicle caught fire.

The police called it an accident.

Rebecca did not.

She opened the briefcase.

Inside were copies of Continuity Covenant payments, Cross medical records, and probate orders signed by Malcolm Hale under Martin’s credentials.

Rebecca had been investigating the same network from the outside.

She placed one photograph on the table.

Malcolm Hale standing beside Vanessa.

Date: six months before she married me.

Vanessa had not entered my life through Cross alone.

She entered through Martin’s family.
