Chapter 17 - THE HOSPITAL LOCKDOWN

Megan was inside a patient-safety lecture when the alert reached her.

She did not run toward an exit blindly.

She checked the room.

Patients. Students. Two doors. One unknown maintenance worker near the rear wall.

She pressed the silent lockdown button.

Malcolm removed his cap.

He wore Martin’s face again.

“Dr. Price,” he said, though Megan was not a doctor.

He always used titles as tools.

Megan moved behind the podium.

“What do you want?”

“Amanda.”

“She isn’t here.”

“I know.”

He held up a small remote.

The hospital’s old medication network responded to his signal.

Screens changed. Door locks released in three units. Infusion alarms began sounding.

Chaos spread.

Malcolm did not need to poison anyone directly.

He wanted staff distracted while he reached Amanda’s protected room.

Rachel had once taught that powerful networks survive by controlling one institution at a time.

Now the hospital had independent medication verification.

Nurses switched pumps to local mode.

External control failed.

The system bent but did not collapse.

Megan kept Malcolm talking while Claire’s team closed in.

He said the Covenant began as a protection system for families facing incapacitated founders.

Doctors, lawyers, and trustees coordinated continuity.

Then money changed the purpose.

“Every institution becomes what people pay it to become,” he said.

“That is not a defense.”

“No. It is an explanation.”

“Explanations don’t stop consequences.”

He smiled.

“You sound like Arthur.”

Malcolm demanded access to Amanda.

Megan refused.

He pressed the remote again.

Nothing happened.

The hospital had severed the network.

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked like a man without authority.

He pulled a syringe from his coat and held it against his own neck.

“If I die, the Archive releases every protected identity.”

Claire entered the lecture hall slowly.

“No one wants you dead.”

“Arthur does.”

I spoke through the room’s screen from federal command.

“No.”

Malcolm looked up.

“You should.”

“Hate is not strategy.”

He laughed.

“Still performing wisdom.”

“No. I’m tired.”

That stopped him.

I told him the Archive list had already been secured from Amanda’s files.

He was no longer the gatekeeper.

The syringe lowered slightly.

Claire moved.

Malcolm injected himself.

Megan reached him first.

The syringe contained insulin.

A lethal dose if untreated.

She administered glucose while agents restrained him.

He survived.

Not because he deserved escape from consequences.

Because care does not become optional when the patient is guilty.

Malcolm was charged before sunset.

Then Claire discovered the Archive release had partially activated.

Twelve erased identities appeared on public websites.

Addresses. New names. Family connections.

Witnesses were suddenly exposed.

One entry belonged to Claire Brooks.

Another to Amanda.

The final entry belonged to Noah.

Not his current address.

A future guardianship placement.

Someone had already prepared for Rachel’s death.
