Chapter 21 - REBECCA’S CHOICE

Rebecca did not join the Vance family immediately.

She kept her apartment, her surname, and her work.

She met Elise for coffee once a month.

Some meetings lasted twenty minutes.

Others lasted hours.

They disagreed over Helen.

Elise remembered a mother.

Rebecca knew only records showing a woman whose genetic material was used without consent.

Both truths.

No one forced sisterhood.

One afternoon, Rebecca asked to see Helen’s grave.

I drove her.

She stood beside the stone without touching it.

“Do I get to grieve someone I never knew?”

“Yes.”

“Do I have to?”

“No.”

She looked relieved.

The hidden will naming “the surviving Vance child” remained contested.

Rebecca could have pursued a larger share.

She chose a fixed settlement funding her investigation work and waived control claims.

Not because she owed us generosity.

Because control had never been what she wanted.

Elise later asked Rebecca to join the company’s independent ethics committee.

Rebecca accepted a two-year term.

No permanent family seat.

During her first review, she found a vendor using cognitive risk scores to recommend executive succession.

The tool relied on private medical data.

Not illegal yet.

Dangerous.

The board suspended it before harm occurred.

No death.

No court war.

Earlier detection.

Rebecca told me, “This is what Helen was trying to do.”

Maybe.

We could not know everything.

Uncertainty stopped feeling like failure.

Noah met Rebecca at a family picnic near the lake.

He asked, “Are you my aunt?”

She answered, “Technically.”

“Do you like trains?”

“No.”

He frowned.

“Then maybe not.”

They became friends anyway.

Family grew through chosen time, not forced labels.

At the end of the year, Rebecca changed one thing.

She added Vance as a middle name.

Not surname.

May you like

Not claim.

A thread she chose to keep.
