Elise served two terms on the Vance Logistics board.
Then she left.
The company did not collapse.
That was the test.
Employee ownership expanded.
Outside directors rotated.
No family member could hold permanent veto.
Rebecca completed her ethics term and left too.
I sold the remaining personal voting shares into the employee trust.
Reporters called it the end of a dynasty.
Good.
Dynasties make inheritance sound more important than people.
The company retained the Vance name because employees voted to keep it.
Not as family property.
As shared history.
One proposal suggested naming the headquarters after me.
I refused.
They named the patient-transport division after Helen instead, but only after Elise and Rebecca agreed.
The division specialized in transparent medical logistics with dual authorization and patient confirmation.
A business built near the same field that once moved people secretly.
Repair, not purity.
At the final shareholder meeting, I sat in the back.
No special chair.
No automatic speech.
An employee asked whether I regretted giving up control.
“Yes.”
The room laughed.
I smiled.
“Regret and correctness can coexist.”
Control had protected me once.
Then made me a target.
Distribution felt vulnerable.
It was also healthier.
