Chapter 16 - THE PROBATE WAR

The courthouse reopened after a three-hour search.
No bomb.
Only delay.
The hearing moved to a federal courtroom with independent digital systems.
Every participant appeared in person.
No remote testimony unless medically necessary.
No family member controlled access.
The judge began with the simplest question.
“Mr. Vance, are you alive?”
“Yes.”
The room laughed once, nervously.
The judge did not.
She asked me to state my full name, childhood address, Helen’s middle name, Elise’s birth date, and the phrase written inside the first trust document.
I answered.
Then Malcolm’s attorney presented a video.
Another Arthur sat in a medical bed.
My face.
My voice.
He claimed Elise and Priya coerced me.
He asked the court to restore Vanessa’s will and recognize Rebecca as sole surviving heir.
Rebecca stood.
“I reject that claim.”
The attorney smiled.
“You reject inheritance?”
“I reject being used as a weapon.”
The video Arthur began coughing.
Amanda froze the image.
“The left ear is wrong.”
She explained the prosthetic.
The court ordered a live response.
The false Arthur could not answer personal questions beyond the prepared script.
The feed disconnected.
Malcolm’s attorney claimed technical failure.
Then Martin testified.
Not as my lawyer.
As a witness.
He admitted hiding Malcolm’s existence.
Admitted failing to report suspicious estate activity years earlier.
Admitted shame made him protect family secrecy over client safety.
The defense attacked his credibility.
Martin answered, “That is fair.”
No excuse.
The honesty strengthened the parts records supported.
Megan authenticated the bedside pen and hospital timeline.
The expired notary stamp did not invalidate the later will, but it explained why Malcolm targeted the first amendment.
Priya introduced my new open signing.
Rebecca testified about her creation and the attack on her car.
Elise testified about being kidnapped and listed as contingency.
Rachel testified about Noah.
Amanda testified about the Archive.
The judge suspended every disputed inheritance claim and placed remaining trust assets under independent protection pending criminal trial.
No family member gained control.
Malcolm lost the freeze strategy.
Then a deputy entered and whispered to Claire.
The man arrested outside Vance Logistics was not Malcolm.
Another substitute.
The real Malcolm had been inside the courtroom.
Claire looked toward the defense table.
Martin’s attorney was gone.
Not Malcolm’s attorney.
Martin’s.
The lawyer who had advised him during suspension.
He had left his briefcase behind.
Inside was a silicone mask.
Martin stared at the empty chair.
“He sat beside me for two days.”
Malcolm had entered as the person protecting Martin from suspicion.
The pattern was perfect.
Access disguised as care.
Court security locked every exit.
Too late.
Malcolm had already left through the judges’ corridor using a copied marshal badge.
But he had made one error.
The badge contained an active location chip.
May you like
It moved toward the hospital.
Toward Megan.
