Chapter 3 - The Broken Rules

The heavy, lethal silence in the drawing room stretched out for what felt like an absolute eternity. The massive armed guards shifted uncomfortably, unsure of how to react to a four-year-old threat.

Vincent Marquetti didn't yell. He didn't summon his enforcers to throw them out.

Instead, the towering, terrifying mafia boss slowly, deliberately lowered his massive muscular frame, dropping entirely to one knee on the expensive Persian rug until he was exactly eye-level with the tiny girl in the pink floral dress.

He rested one heavily tattooed hand against his knee, leaning in slightly. His intense blue-gray eyes studied Lily with a profound, quiet fascination, looking at her as though absolutely nobody in his entire, violent life had ever spoken to him that way before.

Elena covered her mouth with trembling hands, biting back a terrified sob. Across the room, Tony—a forty-two-year-old senior enforcer with massive, broad shoulders and a fitted black suit—watched the scene unfold with wide, completely stunned eyes.

Lily didn't flinch under the mobster's intense gaze. She began counting aggressively on her tiny fingers. First, she pointed an accusatory finger directly at Vincent’s polished black shoes resting near the sofa, and then she pointed sharply toward the massive breakfast table across the room.

Vincent’s cold, intimidating expression began to shift, the dark anger morphing into a strange, highly reluctant curiosity.

"No shoes on the couch," Lily listed, her face completely disapproving, her determined blue eyes never leaving Vincent's face, her small voice matter-of-fact and incredibly bossy. "You skipped breakfast, and you were loud."
