Chapter 5 - The Unseen Resemblance

To the absolute, mind-bending astonishment of everyone in the room, Vincent Marquetti actually stood up, allowed the tiny girl to lead him across the rug, and sat down quietly on a small stool in the corner of his own drawing room.

Lily gave him one final, stern, warning glare, then turned around and skipped happily back to her mother, completely satisfied that justice had been properly served in the household.

Elena immediately grabbed her daughter's hand, bowed her head in profound, trembling submission, and practically sprinted out of the room, dragging the little girl toward the safety of the servant's quarters.

Vincent remained sitting in the corner, staring at the empty doorway.

The bizarre, humorous moment completely faded, replaced by a sudden, intense, and deeply painful psychological shock.

As the little girl had stared him down, Vincent hadn't just seen a brave kid. He had looked directly into her bright blue eyes, noticed the specific, undeniable wave of her light-brown hair, and witnessed a fierce, stubborn, completely unyielding posture that he hadn't seen in over five years.

It was the exact, absolute mirror image of his younger brother, Leo.

Leo had been brutally assassinated five years ago by a rival family. He had been the only soft, decent part of the Marquetti bloodline, a man who had tried to leave the mob to start a family with a civilian woman whose identity Vincent had never been able to discover.

Vincent’s heart began to hammer violently against his ribs. The math perfectly aligned. The child was four years old. The mother was hiding under a false identity, working as a maid in a heavily fortified estate.
