Chapter 8 - The Kitchen Ambush

The massive, stainless steel industrial kitchen in the basement of the estate was completely empty of cooking staff, the heavy metal doors locked tight from the inside.

Elena was backed aggressively into a corner against the cold metal walk-in freezer doors. She was holding four-year-old Lily tightly behind her legs, desperately using her own body as a physical shield. Her expressive eyes were wide with sheer, absolute, paralyzing panic.

Standing ten feet away was Marcus, the estate manager. He wasn't holding a clipboard anymore. He was holding a heavy, black suppressed pistol, pointing it directly at the terrified mother.

"You really thought you could hide her here forever, Elena?" Marcus sneered, his voice dripping with toxic, arrogant malice. "You thought Vincent Marquetti would ever care about a lowly maid? He doesn't even know who the brat is. My employers send their regards. It's time to finish what we started five years ago."

"Please," Elena begged, tears of pure, unadulterated terror streaming down her cheeks. "Marcus, please, I'll take her and leave the city tonight. We'll disappear. Just let my little girl go! She's innocent!"

"No loose ends," Marcus replied coldly, slowly raising the barrel of the suppressed weapon, his finger tightening heavily on the trigger, completely ready to execute them both on the cold tile floor.

He assumed he had absolute, unchecked power in the basement. He assumed the boss was completely oblivious upstairs.

He was entirely, fatally wrong.
