Chapter 7 - The Shadow in the Alley

"She isn't going anywhere with you, Victor."

The deep, rumbling voice echoed off the brick walls of the alley.

Victor froze. He instantly dropped Elena’s wrist and spun around.

Stepping into the dim light was Dante Moretti. He wasn't wearing a suit jacket anymore. His white shirt sleeves were rolled up, exposing the dark, lethal tattoos on his muscular forearms. His face was an unreadable mask of cold, cinematic fury.

All the blood violently drained from Victor’s face. He stumbled backward, his back hitting the hood of his SUV.

"Boss!" Victor stammered, panic flooding his eyes. "What... what are you doing out here? I was just collecting a debt from an outside client!"

"She works in my house," Dante stated, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "She cooks my meals. She cleans my floors. And you decided it was a smart business move to extort her to pay for her daughter's asthma medicine."

"She's lying to you, Dante!" Victor yelled desperately, raising his hands in defense. "She's a junkie! She borrowed the money for drugs! I was doing the family a favor by cleaning up the staff!"

"Is that why you broke her wrist?" Dante asked, stepping closer.

Victor realized his silver tongue couldn't save him. He dropped the act. His hand shot toward the waistband of his jeans, reaching for his concealed weapon.
