Chapter 9 - The Debt Forgiven

"Take him to the basement of the warehouse," Dante commanded, stepping away from the bleeding enforcer in disgust. "Strip his accounts. Return every single dollar he extorted to the people he stole it from. And make sure he never sees the sun again."

"No! Dante, please!" Victor screamed as the massive guards grabbed him by the arms, dragging him violently toward a waiting van. His pathetic, desperate cries faded down the alley, ending his reign of terror forever.

The alley fell completely silent.

Dante took a deep breath, smoothing down his white shirt. He turned around to face Elena.

The young mother was backed against the brick wall, trembling violently, completely overwhelmed by the violence she had just witnessed.

Dante walked over to her. He didn't look like a terrifying mafia boss anymore. He looked like a protector.

He gently reached into the pocket of Victor’s dropped leather jacket, pulled out the thick stack of fifty thousand dollars, and handed it directly back to Elena.

"Your debt is paid," Dante said softly.

Elena stared at the money, then looked up at Dante with tears of profound, overwhelming relief pouring down her cheeks.

"Mr. Moretti... I can't take your money," Elena wept.

"It's not my money," Dante smiled faintly. "Consider it a signing bonus for your daughter."
