Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Palm

There was no dialogue. The heavy, tense silence of the sprawling marble hall was suddenly deafening.
Isabella glared down at the filthy maid's child, her lips curling into a sneer of absolute revulsion. But as her slow eye movement tracked downward to the little girl's extended hand, the arrogant, cruel momentum completely vanished from her body.
A tight, cinematic close-up focused entirely on Lily’s tiny, closed fist. Slowly, deliberately, the three-year-old opened her small fingers.
Resting perfectly in the center of her pale little palm was a single, heavy, shiny gold button.
"Pretty," Lily whispered softly, her innocent voice carrying a haunting clarity through the cold corridor.
Isabella completely froze. The steaming porcelain teacup she held in her left hand began to rattle violently against its saucer. Her breathing stopped entirely. All the color drained from her perfectly contoured face, leaving her looking like a terrified ghost.
It wasn't just a random button. It was a custom-forged, solid gold button bearing the intricate crest of a rival mafia syndicate.
Three years ago, Isabella had secretly unlocked the back gates of this very estate, allowing a team of assassins wearing those exact gold-buttoned coats to slip inside. Their mission had been to murder the Don's pregnant first wife, clearing the path for Isabella to take the throne.
