Chapter 6 - The Maid's Confession

"Where did she get this?" Don Moretti whispered, his voice trembling with a raw, devastating emotion that no one in his syndicate had ever witnessed.

Isabella panicked, rushing down the remaining stairs. "Damiano, I told you! She stole it from my jewelry box! Throw them out! Call the guards!"

"Silence!" the Don roared, the sudden, explosive sound completely silencing the entire mansion. He didn't look away from the little girl. He shifted his piercing, dark eyes to the weeping maid holding her. "Rosa. Look at me."

Rosa slowly lifted her head. Her face was streaked with tears, her black and white uniform ruined, but as she looked into the eyes of the mafia boss, a sudden, fierce, protective courage completely replaced her panic.

"She didn't steal it from her jewelry box, Don Moretti," Rosa said, her voice shaking but absolutely resolute. "She found it hidden inside the false bottom of Miss Isabella's bedside drawer when I was cleaning her suite this morning."

Isabella let out a hysterical, guilty gasp. "You lying rat! I will have you killed!"
