Chapter 4 - The Descent of the King

The words didn't echo; they simply dominated the space, carrying an absolute, unquestionable authority that made the armed guards standing at the far end of the hall stiffen in terror.
Don Moretti began his slow descent down the grand sweeping staircase. With every step he took, the heavy, cinematic realism of his power suffocated the room. His dark, dangerous eyes never left the tiny three-year-old girl standing calmly in her duck socks.
Isabella was hyperventilating. The steaming porcelain teacup shook so violently in her hand that hot tea sloshed over the rim, burning her skin, but she was too terrified to even flinch.
"Damiano, darling," Isabella stammered, her voice pitching up in a pathetic, desperate attempt to regain control of the narrative. "This... this filthy maid's child was trying to steal from us! I caught her snooping in my private dressing room! She stole one of my gold buttons! I was just disciplining her!"
Rosa kept her head bowed, weeping silently, her hands gripping Lily’s small shoulders. In the brutal world of the syndicate, a maid accused of theft by the future Lady of the House was usually dragged into the basement and never seen again.
But Don Moretti didn't even look at his beautiful, panicking fiancée. He walked straight past Isabella, the fabric of his dark suit brushing against her white silk robe, ignoring her completely.
