Chapter 4 - The Son's Promise

"What is the meaning of this?" Ethan suddenly hissed, desperately trying to regain control of his party. He stepped forward, glaring at Claire’s dark blue uniform. "Is this some kind of sick joke, Claire? Go upstairs and change your clothes right now!"
Claire didn't even blink. She didn't raise her voice. She simply stared right through him, her eyes as cold as a loaded weapon.
Before Ethan could reach out and grab her arm, a small figure broke through the crowd of terrified guests.
It was Noah.
The seven-year-old boy was wearing a sharp, tailored dark suit. He didn't look confused. He didn't look scared.
Noah ran directly to his mother. He grabbed her hand, looking up at the glittering medals on her chest with a massive, incredibly proud smile.
"You promised, Mom," Noah beamed, his innocent voice echoing perfectly through the silent room.
Ethan physically staggered backward. "Noah? You knew about this?"
Noah had discovered his mother's uniform hidden in a secure lockbox a month ago. Claire had sat her son down, explained that Mommy's job was a secret to keep bad people away, and promised that on his seventh birthday, she would finally show him what she really did.
