Chapter 6 - The Colonel's Rank

Ethan was hyperventilating. His expensive dark suit suddenly felt like a suffocating straightjacket.

He looked at the heavily armed federal agents stepping out of the black SUVs outside. He looked at the high-ranking officer holding a rigid salute in the center of his living room. Finally, he looked back at the woman he had abused, belittled, and cheated on for twelve years.

"What..." Ethan stammered, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated terror. He pointed a trembling finger at the silver eagles resting heavily on Claire's dark blue shoulders. "What rank are you?"

Claire slowly lowered her hand from her salute.

"Colonel Claire Vance," the officer answered for her, turning to glare at Ethan with absolute disgust. "United States Army, Military Intelligence Division. Your wife is the commanding director of a highly classified federal cyber-security task force. She holds the highest security clearance in this state."

Margaret let out a high-pitched gasp, clutching her emerald-green dress as her knees literally buckled.

The woman she had spent a decade calling a "lazy, worthless maid" was actually one of the most powerful, lethal intelligence officers in the country.

"That's a lie!" Ethan shrieked hysterically, desperately trying to reject reality. "She's a housewife! She doesn't have any money! I pay for everything in this house! I built my company with my own two hands!"

👉 Ethan's arrogant screaming was violently interrupted by a man walking through the door with a single blue folder.
