Chapter 3 - The Hidden Hatch

Meredith took another terrified step backward, her eyes darting toward the front door.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Arthur!" Meredith shrieked, her high-society mask completely shattering into a frantic, feral panic. "Noah probably just ran away into the woods! We should be outside looking for him! Why are you staring at me?!"
Arthur didn't argue. He didn't scream.
He turned away from her, his tactical mind racing. He looked down at the pristine, polished hardwood floor. He noticed a large, incredibly heavy, antique Persian rug positioned perfectly in the center of the living room, directly over the spot where Lily had heard the tapping.
Arthur moved with explosive, blinding speed.
He grabbed the edge of the heavy rug and violently yanked it backward across the room.
Meredith let out a blood-curdling scream of pure despair as the floor was exposed.
There, perfectly camouflaged into the pattern of the hardwood floorboards, was a square, reinforced steel hatch with a heavy iron padlock.
Arthur’s blood turned to absolute ice. He dropped to his knees, frantically yanking on the padlock. It was completely locked tight. He slammed his fist against the steel hatch.
"Noah!" Arthur roared, the sheer volume of his voice making the windows rattle. "Noah, are you down there?!"
A faint, muffled, terrified cry echoed from the darkness below the steel.
"Dad! Help!"
Arthur spun around. He didn't look at his sister with anger. He looked at her with demonic, unstoppable wrath.
