Chapter 8 - The Stripping of the Thief

The police officers dragged Meredith back into the living room to secure the scene.
When the lead detective saw the massive, camouflaged steel hatch in the middle of the expensive hardwood floor, he stopped dead in his tracks. He looked down into the dark, freezing concrete bunker, and then looked at the terrified eight-year-old boy clinging to his father.
The detective's expression turned blacker than midnight. He looked at Meredith with pure, unadulterated disgust.
"You locked a child in a concrete box," the detective stated, his voice dripping with lethal contempt.
"He was fine! It was only for a few hours!" Meredith shrieked pathetically, trying to twist away from the steel handcuffs.
"Add attempted manslaughter to the charges," the detective ordered his men.
The cold steel cuffs clicked loudly around Meredith’s wrists, snapping the arrogant thief back into the horrific reality of her crimes. The officers violently ripped the designer purse from her shoulder. They opened it right there in the living room, pulling out six thick, massive bundles of cash wrapped in the bank bands belonging to Arthur's mother.
Meredith was entirely, irreversibly ruined. She had lost her money, her business, her family, and her freedom in a matter of minutes.
"Arthur! Have mercy!" Meredith sobbed, dragging her feet as the officers pulled her out of the beautiful house and into the back of a police cruiser.
"You showed my son no mercy in the dark," Arthur replied quietly, turning his back on her completely.
