Chapter 5 - The Desperate Breach

Arthur violently threw Meredith to the floor.
"Don't move," Arthur ordered, pointing a lethal finger at her. "If you try to run, I will hunt you down."
He didn't wait for her response. He sprinted out of the living room, his green sweater catching on the doorframe. He ran straight into his garage, frantically tearing through his massive, heavy-duty toolbox. He grabbed an industrial steel crowbar and a heavy sledgehammer.
He ran back into the living room.
Meredith was still sobbing pathetically on the floor, trying to crawl toward her purse.
Arthur completely ignored her. He dropped to his knees next to the camouflaged hatch. He wedged the sharp end of the steel crowbar directly into the heavy iron padlock. He raised the heavy sledgehammer high above his head and brought it down with absolute, explosive, bone-shattering force.
CLANG.
The sound was deafening. The padlock cracked, but it didn't break.
"Hold on, Noah! Daddy's coming!" Arthur roared, tears of pure, desperate love and terror streaming down his face.
He swung the sledgehammer again. And again. And again. The sheer, unstoppable adrenaline of a father trying to save his child fueled every single massive strike.
On the fifth strike, the heavy iron padlock violently shattered into pieces, flying across the polished hardwood floor.
