Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

Meredith had managed to grab her purse. She was hyperventilating, backing toward the front door, realizing her entire life had just violently collapsed into dust.

"Arthur, please!" Meredith shrieked hysterically, the arrogant, wealthy mask completely shattered into a million pieces. "I'll give the money back! I'll pay for Mom's treatments! Just let me walk out the door! I am your sister!"

"You aren't my sister," Arthur stated, his voice completely devoid of human empathy.

He didn't hit her. A man didn't need to strike a pathetic coward to destroy her.

Arthur pulled his cell phone from his pocket. He hadn't hung up the phone when Lily first called him to the floor. The 911 dispatcher had heard every single word of the last ten minutes.

"The police are already at the end of the street, Meredith," Arthur said coldly.

Meredith’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. She lunged for the front door, yanking the handle frantically.

But as she pulled the heavy wooden door open, she didn't find freedom.

Standing on the front porch were four heavily armed police officers, their weapons drawn, their faces completely unreadable.

"Meredith Vance," the lead officer barked, stepping into the house. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, kidnapping, and child endangerment."

"No! Please!" Meredith wailed like a banshee, thrashing and kicking wildly as two massive officers grabbed her by her pink cardigan, hauling her violently away from the door.

"I did it for the family! I needed the money to save my business!" Meredith screamed, desperately trying to justify her monstrous actions.

"You did it for greed," Arthur whispered into the cold air.
