Chapter 4 - The Twisted Motive

Meredith backed against the wall, hyperventilating, completely cornered.

"I don't have the key!" Meredith sobbed hysterically, sliding down the wall. "I dropped it in the storm drain outside! Arthur, you have to understand! I had to do it!"

Arthur grabbed her by the collar of her pink cardigan, violently hauling her up to her feet.

"You locked my eight-year-old son in a hidden bunker under the floor!" Arthur screamed, shaking her with terrifying force. "Why?! What did he ever do to you?!"

"He found the bag!" Meredith shrieked, completely losing her mind. "I was over here visiting this morning, and he went snooping in my purse! He found the cash, Arthur! He saw the bank bands! If he told you, you would have put the pieces together!"

Arthur froze, his hands still gripping her collar.

The cinematic realization crashed over him with the force of a freight train.

Two days ago, their elderly mother’s life savings—over three hundred thousand dollars in cash that was supposed to pay for her cancer treatments—had vanished from her home safe. Meredith had cried the loudest, blaming the home health aides, insisting the police investigate the staff.

Noah hadn't run away. The innocent eight-year-old boy had simply opened his aunt's purse to look for a piece of candy, and he had found the stolen bundles of cash.

Meredith hadn't panicked and run. She had lured her own nephew into a hidden storm shelter she had built years ago, locked him in the dark, and sat in the living room drinking tea while his father called the police in tears.
