Chapter 6 - The Architect of Treason

Close-up: Tight profile shot on Leo’s handsome, rugged face as he stopped directly in front of the massive dark wood double doors.
He gripped the heavy metal key tightly in his fist, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles visibly jumped beneath his dark stubble. His intense eyes were filled with a deeply agonizing mixture of profound fear, crushing heartbreak, and incredibly dark, painful recognition.
"Carmela..." Leo whispered. The single name escaped his lips like a terrifying, breathless curse, laced with absolute, unadulterated terror.
Three years ago, just weeks after little Maya was born, Leo had uncovered a massive, horrifying conspiracy within his own ranks. He discovered undeniable, concrete proof that his beloved wife, Carmela, wasn't a loyal partner. She was a highly embedded, incredibly manipulative operative working directly for the rival syndicate.
She had married Leo entirely as a deep-cover assignment. And when the time was right, she had personally orchestrated the massive car bomb intended to assassinate him and seize complete control of his vast criminal empire.
Leo had survived the assassination attempt by sheer, miraculous luck. He had confronted Carmela before she could escape the city.
In the ruthless, bloody world of the mafia, treason was punished by immediate, agonizing execution. But as Leo looked at his newborn daughter sleeping in her crib, he couldn't pull the trigger. He couldn't force his innocent child to grow up knowing her father had murdered her mother, nor could he let the world know his wife was a sociopathic traitor.
So, Leo staged her death in the car bomb. He held a massive, fake funeral, accepting the condolences of the city.
